Label positioning.

Right aligned labels

The labels should be right aligned when:
  1. it is essential that the labels and field have a clear association.
  2. when vertical space is an issue.
The main disadvantage of the right aligned labels is that they are difficult to scan to understand what a contact form is about.

Left aligned labels

The labels should be left aligned
  1. when the information entered by a site visitor is unfamiliar
  2. when vertical space is an issue.
The main disadvantage is less clear association between a label and a field. Long spaces between labels and fields make a contact form hard to complete.

Top aligned labels

Contact form labels should have the top alignment when
  1. the information which a contact form collects, is well known for your visitors,
  2. top aligned labels are proven to minimize time to completion.
  3. top aligned labels give flexibility for label change.
  4. a contact form with top aligned labels may be easily placed at the side panel.
The main disadvantage of the top aligned labels is that they require additional vertical space.
